Vietnam Marine Explains Why M60 Gunners Had 7 Seconds to Live
Shawn Ryan and Johnnie Clark discuss what it was like to be an 18-year-old Marine M60 machine gunner in Vietnam, where machine gunners were considered the number one target once a firefight started. Johnnie breaks down the reality of carrying hundreds of rounds through the jungle, keeping the M60 running without spare barrels, and firing until the barrel turned red hot and white hot in the middle of battle. He also reflects on how critical the gun was to keeping Marines alive, the brutal conditions that destroyed gear and clothing, and the weapons he carried.

Bruh come on. Drop the damn episode already.
This Vet touched my heart. God Bless him!
🙏✝️❤️
The Pig (M60) was a curse for so many guys who used it in Nam, especially when using tracer fire at times. I didn’t know that stat about the Pig; just only that most of the platoon hated the 60 gunner for being so slow when walking/running, but loving him when the 60 rock n’ rolled. It did temporarily divert enemy fire from carbiners who needed tontske out enemies before their 60 was take out.
I would’ve experimented with burst & run at times if sufficient cover wasn’t available, even trying to give the impression of multiple Pigs in the fight.
Was the sheath that was shown with the k- bar actually issued with a k bar or was that the sheath for the bayonet ?
I have my papa’s Ka-Bar from Vietnam with all its original patina
Ka Bar and M8A sheath (from m7 bayonet). what a bullshit
Wanted to say something from another video. I was in charge of trying to get the Trucks started that Saddam paraded through Baghdad’s streets. I received a NAM for An Nasiriyah and I was the lead mechanic 3521 for the entire Convoy for General Natonski. There was no Weapons of Mass Destruction. IED’s were created from what they left and hid, and snuck in. Semper Fi _ Winning Hearts and Minds. Task Force Tarawa 2003
And yes , ” Jason” gived the same present, an P365 to the antiamerican Gavin Neeson, but not to Trmp.
Soo, fk SIG
His happiness when receiving the pistol made me so happy
The amount of men those machine gunners killed in Vietnam, ww2 is unreal. Imagine being one in ww1 for Christ sake? Just tens of thousands of men running at you in the open, you just need to shoot fast enough to wipe them out before they get to your
Watching the childish joy on his face when Shawn Gave him that pistol was so heart warming
The way Vietnam vets were treated when they got home was truly horrendous. All of that hate and anger should’ve went directly toward Lyndon Johnson and all the other asshiles like Robert McNamara & all the other assholes that profited off of that dumbass war
Thanks for your service Shawn, also for sharing these guys stories its amazing hearing what they went through
Sorry to tell everyone, Sig is far overrated. Had one of the first, jamming like no other and wasn’t limp wristed. The frame actually ruptured and the seller gave me hell about it. Is what it is, no other than a 19 & 42 for me. I’m the dude that runs thousands of rounds not a YouTube so called expert. 😂
A tool is useless if it’s not dependable.
my uncle said they smoked a shit ton weed in vietnam.
You made that man’s year with that gun, Sean. Bless your heart. 😊
Thanks for not giving Johnnie a 320. It would be a shame for him to have survived Vietnam only to bleed out in his golden years.
lol, that ole Devil Dog was happier than a pig in sh!t to get that Sig – I love to see it. He certainly earned it.
MABUHAY ❤🙏👍🇵🇭
Shawn’s the fucking man for giving this ‘Nam vet a “present”
Nam.
I’ve witnessed seeing rounds go down the transparent barrel. Legit.

Shawn i love your show awesome great thank you brother
After listening to this on a podcast, and then to see this video and seeing his body language really makes a huge difference.
Thank you Sir. For sharing another excellent video 🤝
Every soldier/marine ever has made the “7 second” life expectancy claim. Like come on dude. Youre already bad ass. You dont gotta lie about shit like a good chunk of the SF community has been doing.
My uncle John H Pringle was a radio man USMC 2 tours in Vietnam it really messed him up when he got home with ptsd nightmares and alcoholism to cope stomach ulcers killed him rip soldier 😢
Good boy that one
I need to get into Jason’s heart so I get one
Love seeing new firearms and big smiles!
I saw “Saving Private Ryan” in theaters in 1998, which is about WWII, a war that ended in 1945, 53 years prior. I just watched it again the other day and it occurred to me that American involvement in Vietnam ended 53 years ago, meaning that Vietnam vets are about the age that WWII vets were when I was growing up. My perception of time as I get older kinda ambushes me in funny ways like that.
He remains unbroken. A true legend.
Keep the Nam vets coming, Shawn! Great work out there buddy!
Great clip.
Semper Fi fellow knuckle dragger! Guns up!
The world needs more Johnnys and Shauns
Love Your Shows Sean.
10:46 that’s beautiful….. His happiness is contagious
THANKS!!! I LOVE YOU—–PATRIOTS!!!
lol that’s so dope
THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WHEN HE RECEIVED THAT PISTOL – PRICELESS ,THAT YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND ENJOY YOUR NEW TOY
Jesus loves you. He wants your present more than you want his. Talk with him. God Bless.
I like this man!
I enjoy all of Sean’s military guest. In my humble opinion, he should focus more on stories like this and avoid the politics altogether. Every time he gets one of these whack jobs on there really makes me doubt his credibility.
